Sam's Club, BJ's and Costco Prices Are Now in Morning Basket, Priced at the Quantity You Actually Buy
Morning Basket now prices your grocery list at Sam's Club, BJ's Wholesale Club and Costco next to Kroger, Aldi, Walmart, Target and Meijer. A club pack is priced for the amount you'd use, so a 2-pack of peanut butter and a 16 oz jar compare honestly, and the app tells you whether the membership pays.
Starting this week, Morning Basket prices your grocery list at Sam's Club, BJ's Wholesale Club and Costco, next to Kroger, Aldi, Walmart, Target, H-E-B, Meijer, Stop & Shop and Sprouts. If there's a club within 60 miles of your ZIP, it shows up in your store list the next time you open the app.
The hard part of comparing a warehouse club to a grocery store was never finding the prices. It was the pack sizes. A club sells peanut butter as two 48-ounce jars. Your grocery store sells one 16-ounce jar. Put those two numbers side by side and the club "loses" every time, which is wrong, and the club "wins" if you only compare per ounce, which is also wrong if you don't want six pounds of peanut butter in the pantry.
So we price the club pack for the quantity you'd actually use, show you the whole-pack price beside it, and let the app do the membership math.
What it looks like
Here's a real list we priced on launch day in Cincinnati: olive oil, peanut butter, rice, ground coffee and laundry detergent, the kind of pantry staples people buy in bulk.
| Store | Total for the five items | |---|---| | Kroger (main store) | $21.56 | | Aldi | $22.25 | | Target | $29.85 | | Meijer | $30.15 | | Walmart | $31.39 | | Sam's Club, at your quantity | $11.94 | | Costco, at your quantity | $15.41 |
Two things to notice. The club totals are not what you'd pay at the register; that number for Costco is $104.95, because you're buying five big packs. The $15.41 is what the portion you'd use out of those packs costs. That's the number that compares honestly with Kroger's $21.56.
And under each club tile, the app says whether the membership pays:
Sam's Club: saves ~$41.69/mo on these 5 items · clears the $50/yr membership ($4.17/mo) Costco: saves ~$26.65/mo on these 5 items · clears the $65/yr membership ($5.42/mo)
When a club doesn't save on your list, it says that instead. On a different five items earlier the same day, Costco read "No saving vs Kroger on these 6 items," which is exactly what you want to know before you buy a membership.
Item by item
Tap a club's tile and you get every row the way the club sells it:
- Kirkland Signature extra virgin olive oil, 3 L. $28.49 at the register. Your 17 oz of it: $4.75. Costco wins that row by $1.74.
- Jif creamy peanut butter, 2 × 48 oz. $13.99 the pack. Your 16 oz: $2.33. Kroger wins by 4 cents.
- Supreme long grain rice, 25 lb. $15.99. Your 2 lb: $1.28. Costco by 51 cents.
- Folgers classic roast, 43.5 oz. $22.99. Your 12 oz: $5.81. Costco by 19 cents.
The 4-cent peanut butter loss is the point of the whole feature. The club is not always cheaper, and an app that only ever said "the club wins" would be useless to you.
How each club is priced
- Sam's Club prices come from your club's own online listings, so the numbers are your club's shelf prices.
- BJ's prices come from the club you pick, through BJ's own search.
- Costco uses two sources. Packaged goods come from Costco's catalog at your warehouse, which are warehouse shelf prices. The fresh basics that catalog doesn't list, milk, eggs, bananas, ground beef and produce, come from Costco Same-Day, and those are delivery prices, typically 15 to 20 percent above the shelf. Every one of those rows carries a "delivered price" label so you never mistake one for the other.
Two honest limits
A club can't be your main store on its own. With one club set up, it stays a comparison against your grocery stores. With two or more clubs, you can compare club to club and make one of them the main store, because then every store in the comparison is priced in whole packs and the cart holds real register prices.
Some items don't price at quantity. Costco lists paper towels by sheet count rather than rolls, so that row can't be split into "your 6 rolls" honestly; the app shows the pack price and says so. The same goes for anything a club sells by a count the grocery store doesn't use.
Where this sits in the app
The clubs are part of Smart Cart, the paid tier, alongside Walmart, Target, Meijer, H-E-B, Stop & Shop and Sprouts, the meal planner and recipe import. Price comparison for Kroger and Aldi stays free. Smart Cart is free for 14 days with no card, then $8.99 a month or $59.99 a year.
To add a club: open the app, go to Profile, tap your stores, and pick the club near you. It prices your current list there within a minute.
