Household Accounts: One Grocery List, Two Phones
Invite your partner to your Morning Basket household. You share one grocery list that updates on both phones, the same stores and budget, and one subscription, each with your own sign-in.
Morning Basket now has Household accounts. You invite your partner, they keep their own sign-in, and the two of you share one grocery list, the same stores and budget, and one Smart Cart subscription. There is no second fee.
This one came straight from a user. Last week someone wrote in to ask whether his wife could be on his account. The honest answer was "not properly", so we built it.
What you share
- One list. Add an item, change a quantity or tick something off, and it shows up on the other phone within a couple of seconds. One of you can add milk from the couch while the other is standing in the dairy aisle.
- The same stores and budget. Your household shops the same stores on the same weekly number, so the price comparison and the budget bar mean the same thing on both phones.
- Your saved recipes and trip history. Save a recipe on one phone and it's on the other; the savings you rack up count for the household.
- One subscription. If one of you has Smart Cart, or is on the free trial, you both do. Nobody pays twice.
What stays yours
Your sign-in. Each of you has your own email and password, so nobody is passing a login around or getting signed out when the other person opens the app.
How to set it up
- Open Profile and find Household.
- Tap Invite. Send the link however you like: text, email, a note on the fridge.
- Your partner opens the link and either creates a sign-in or uses the one they already have.
That's the whole setup. If your partner was already using Morning Basket on their own, the items on their list are added to the shared one, so nothing gets lost.
A few honest details
A household is two people. That covers the way most families actually shop, and it keeps "who changed the list?" a short conversation.
The person who sends the invite is the one who manages the subscription. If it ends, it ends for both of you.
Either of you can end it. The person who invited can remove their partner, and a partner can leave. Whoever leaves goes back to their own account, which was never deleted. The shared list stays with the person who created the household.
Why we did it this way
We could have told people to share one login. Plenty of apps quietly work that way. But one password between two people is a bad habit to encourage, and it falls apart the first time one of you resets it. Separate sign-ins with shared data is the version that still works a year from now.
Who gets it
Everyone. Household accounts work on the free plan and on Smart Cart. If you're on Smart Cart, your partner gets it too.
Open Morning Basket, go to Profile, and send the invite. Then go stand in different aisles and watch the list keep up.
